Oklahoma Land Runs and other Early Day Photos

This is a drawing of the Land Run of September 22, 1891, that appeared on the front page of the "Harper's Weekly, A Journal of Civilization",  Copyright 1891 by Harper and Brothers, New York, Saturday, October 3, 1891. The drawing was by artist W. A. Rogers.The land run of 1891 opened the Iowa and the Sac and Fox reservations for white settlement. This area became what is known today as Lincoln County, OK. The Earps, the Wrights, the Ewings, and the Flatts all were living here in N. Keokuk township, or northwest of Stroud, and are all numbered in the 1900 Oklahoma Territory Census.

My great grandfather, William Cornelius Flatt, was living in the Cherokee Outlet near the time it was opened for white settlement. Two of his daughters were born here...Lulu in 1894 and Arlie, my grandmother, in 1896. When exactly and how he came here I have never been able to determine. However, Arlie's death certificate states that she was born in Meno Twp., Major County, Oklahoma Terriotry on Feb. 29, 1896.
